NASA announces a landmark development in their leadership structure by naming David Salvagnini as the inaugural chief officer responsible for artificial intelligence (AI)
NASA’s head, Bill Nelson, publicized the appointment on May 13, underscoring the space agency’s dedication to remaining a leader in AI advancements.
Salvagnini steps into the new role from his previous position as NASA’s chief data officer, exemplifying the application and ethical cultivation of AI within the realms of space travel and earth sciences. Nelson remarked, “NASA has a long history of embedding AI safely in its operations, and as its capabilities continue to mature, we anticipate a quickening in our rate of discoveries.” Nelson further articulated the necessity of Salvagnini’s leadership, saying, “David will steer NASA in directing the principled employment of AI, both out in the universe and here on our home planet, with the objective of advancing global benefits.”
