Next up was the counter. A handy few articles read in advance suggested a sound idea which was a double layer of Durock. If you delve a bit into their website you will note that their boards (single) hold an evenly distributed horizontal weight of about 60lbs per square foot. Doubling the thickness gives us an approximate 120lbs PSF. Regulare Quickcrete is about 45lbs PSF at the 4″ depth I was making the counters so we appear to be more than amply covered in the structural department.
I ended up making the counter a bit wider than I originally anticipated due to an evenly distributed 3 panel Durock layout. In other words, I didn’t have to cut any boards and that makes me happy. Plus, the new BBQ counter dimensions are pretty big. That makes me even happier.
